The creative premise

The drawing comes first.

A character can begin as a line, a spontaneous sketch, or an old idea that never stopped evolving.

In Characters Reimagined, visual artist and educator Angel Torrella revisits his original character designs through iterative AI-assisted image development. Each interpretation begins with an existing drawing and develops through visual decisions about form, materials, lighting, atmosphere and storytelling.

The process is not simply about producing polished images. It is about examining what makes a character recognizable—and deciding which changes strengthen, rather than replace, its identity.

ORIGINALREIMAGINED

An experimental mechanical creature becomes a monumental industrial presence. Iterations focused on structural load, steel plating, hydraulic joints, ground contact and directional light.

Art direction
Mass, engineering and the relationship between figure and environment.

ORIGINALREIMAGINED

An eccentric pencil caricature becomes a cinematic basketball character study. The original proportions remain intentionally exaggerated while material, light and setting give the figure a new presence.

Art direction
Preserving the drawing’s eccentric anatomy without making it generic.

The Fictional Character

Characters

Original drawing of The Fictional Character
ORIGINALREIMAGINED

A classroom caricature inspired a fictional comic about an artist, a drawing and a spirited disagreement over resemblance. The ink adaptation explores humor, timing and expression.

Art direction
Using exaggeration and panel sequencing to build a story. Characters are presented as fictionalized.

The Cyclopean Machine

Original drawing of The Cyclopean Machine
ORIGINALREIMAGINED

The original drawing was refined in Photoshop before its final cinematic reinterpretation. A transparent green dome protects the cyclopean eye; articulated claws, oxidized armor and heavy mechanical legs preserve the artist’s distinctive silhouette.

Art direction
The green glass dome, central eye, industrial structure and Photoshop-refined design remain essential to the character.

Big Eyes — From Scribbles to Character

Characters
Atmospheric rendered Big Eyes character holding a rag doll
Original line drawing and outfit concept for Big Eyes
ORIGINALREIMAGINED

Developed for the From Scribbles to Characters workshop at The Cut Design Academy, Big Eyes illustrates a complete design pathway: spontaneous marks, pareidolia, multiple character candidates, one selected silhouette, costume development, rendering, and presentation in a fully realized environment.

Teaching focus
From accidental marks to intentional design. The artist chooses the character; each subsequent stage tests how its identity survives changes in style, texture, lighting and setting.

Workshop development

One character. A visible chain of decisions.

The process begins with abstract scribbles and searching for recognizable faces. A series of interpretations leads to the selected “Big Eyes” silhouette. The drawing then evolves into a dressed character, followed by material exploration, multiple views and an atmospheric final scene.

The Nightmare Creature

ORIGINALREIMAGINED

A creature illustration evolves into a dark-fantasy scene. Environment, lighting and surface treatment heighten its menace without erasing the initial silhouette.

Art direction
Balancing dramatic atmosphere with readability of the creature.

The Sumo Wrestler

Characters
Rendered interpretation of The Sumo Wrestler
Original character drawing for The Sumo Wrestler
ORIGINALREIMAGINED

A graphite caricature of a wrestler becomes a fully staged scene in a traditional sumo ring. The compact low stance, topknot and muscular silhouette carry through from the original drawing to a cinematic rendering of mass, skin and atmosphere.

Art direction
Keep the gesture, broad proportions and uncompromising expression of the pencil drawing. Use grounded feet, textured flesh and angled warm light to give the form physical weight.

08 / Character evolution

The Mustached Officer

Characters
Rendered interpretation of The Mustached Officer
Original character drawing for The Mustached Officer
ORIGINALREIMAGINED

The exaggerated mustache, large cheeks and military collar travel through three creative states: an original pencil caricature, an earlier digital portrait, and a contemporary painterly interpretation. The final version sharpens the visual storytelling through costume details and controlled lighting.

Art direction
Preserve the hat, distinctive mustache and geometric face; bring depth to the uniform without losing the humor of the original caricature.

ORIGINALREIMAGINED

An original side-profile caricature develops from pencil into a colored digital portrait and then a richly lit scene. The figure’s sharply articulated nose, curled mustache, red bow tie and covered serving dish remain the anchor points across each iteration.

Art direction
Maintain the exact profile and theatrical posture while exploring cloth, tarnished metal, side light and restrained painterly texture.

A closer look

From gesture to gravity.

The Iron Leviathan demonstrates why iteration matters: greater detail alone did not create weight. The design needed believable structures, contact with the ground and clearer mechanical mass.
